How to Change your Domain’s Nameservers

If you’re migrating your website to InMotion Hosting from another host, one of the last steps you’ll take is pointing your domain’s nameservers to InMotion Hosting’s nameservers. This will direct your domain’s traffic here, and away from your previous web host. If you are unsure exactly what nameservers are, be sure to check out our informative article on the subject.

This article is a guide on how to change your nameservers.

Enjoy fast, secure hosting for your WordPress website with our optimized WordPress Hosting plans!

Please be aware that changes to your nameservers can take up to 24 hours before they take affect, so changes you make will not be immediate.

InMotion Hosting’s Nameservers:

ns1.inmotionhosting.com - IP Address:  74.124.210.242

ns2.inmotionhosting.com -  IP Address:  70.39.150.2
If you are a Reseller, you should point to the following Nameservers:

ns1.servconfig.com - IP Address:  216.194.168.112

ns2.servconfig.com - IP Address:  70.39.146.236

Most registrars do not require you to enter in the IP addresses of your nameservers. However, we’ve provided them in the event you can only use IP addresses.

Changinging nameservers for domains managed/purchased through InMotion Hosting.

Nameservers for domains that are managed by us can be changed through the Account Management Panel. For more information on changing your nameservers for your InMotion Hosting domain, please see the article on How to change your Domain Nameservers in AMP.

Where do I change my Nameservers for domains registered elsewhere?

If you registered your domain name with InMotion Hosting, you do not need to change anything as it is already pointed here. However, if you have registered the domain name with another registrar you will need to change the nameservers with that company. Please see the following links for the major registrars below:

Did you know you could have your own nameserver with your domain? With a VPS or dedicated server you can.

  • So I shanged the nameservers of my domain on squarespace to the ones here, and it was working fine. Now when I go to my domain it behaves as if im still on squarespace nameservers.

    • Do you know if anyone working on your site had you use a hosts file modification or something to affect the viewing of your site? If not, you may want to contact our Live Support team to double-check that the Nameserver configuration is correct.

  • Hello. I activated a free SSL certificate for my primary domain, and had my domain pointed to the InMotion servers as the free SSL requires. However, today I set up Cloudflare for my site, which requires the domain be pointed to the Cloudflare servers. The Cloudfare nameservers have now propagated and my site works fine.

When I check the eligibility of my domain for free SSL, it now shows as ineligible, although it is still accessible through the https url. So…I’m confused. Does my site have an active SSL certificate even though it’s pointed to Cloudflare? If not, is it possible to have free SSL and run Cloudfare on the site? Thanks for your reply.

    • Hello!

Thank you for your comment regarding eligibility of a Free SSL for the domain you have pointed to CloudFlare recently. You should be able to utilize the Free SSL while pointed to CloudFlare. However, since the domain is not pointed to the server (rather CloudFlare), then the domain is no longer eligible/configured for Domain Control Validation to completed successfully. For more information and details regarding the Free SSL offered by InMotion Hosting, you can review our article titled: Free SSL Guide. From that guide, you can see that the domains used with the Free SSL must be pointed to InMotion Hosting servers, otherwise, the validation process will fail, and the SSL will not work as expected. I hope this helps!

      Sincerely,
      Carlos E

  • Hi I am moving from GODaddy to Inmotion and have paid the subscription, I have changed the nameservers on my godaddy account but it still does not register on the inmotion side and when I try to go on to the website it says it is no longer parked by godaddy, so how do I go about getting the website back up through inmotion,

    • Typically, propagation time is 4 to 24 hours. If its taking longer than that after you have changed the nameservers you may want to contact Support.

  • Hei, I purchased a new domain under inmotion and used it as primary domain. however, after I installed the WP under the new domain, I am not able to access the WP admin page. please help

  • I just noticed thet the nameservers in the description is wrong… nameserver 1 is “ns.inmotionhosting.com” and not “ns1.inmotionhosting.com”.

    • I am trying to transfer my domain registration to inmotion. My web site has been up for several months. I have an EPP code, but it appears the process has stalled. I checked with the current host and the domain privacy has been disabled. I don’t know what the problem is now?

    • Do i still have to personally point my new domain to inmotion nameserver despite the fact I bought my domain name and hosting through inmotion. My account was confirmed an hour ago

    • Astie, if you bought the domain and hosting from us you should be pointed to our name servers by default.

  • What is the corrent name server name? According to below link

    https://www.inmotionhosting.com/support/domain-names/dns-nameserver-changes/complete-guide-to-dns-records/

    the Name server should be

    ns.inmotionhosting.com – IP Address: 74.124.210.242

    But here

    ns1.inmotionhosting.com – IP Address: 74.124.210.242

I have two websites I used first option for one website and second option for another website. First website works fine but second website pointing to my old host.

so what is the corrent name server? Kindly fix the errors if any

    • Hello Ram,

Thanks for pointing out the issue in the URL your provided. The article was updated, but the category page (for DNS and Name server changes) had not been updated. The nameservers were recently updated to allow for the use of NS1.inmotionhosting.com. The NS.inmotionhosting.com setting should also still work. I have updated the category page to show the newest version of the nameservers to be used – NS1.inmotionhosting.com and NS2.inmotionhosting.com (note: I’ve only capitalized “NS” for the purposes of clarity and emphasis. Using all lower case for the entries is okay.).

If you have any further questions or comments, please let us know.

      Regards,
      Arnel C.

  • Hi, I cancelled my website account with company X and moved to company Y. Now I can´t get access to my domain names registered with company X. I´ve tried to contact my former domain provider, with no success. What are my options?

    • If you cannot find any resolution with the company you registered the domains with, you will want to contact ICANNto file a complaint.

  • Hello, I have recently pointed two new domain names to my reseller package. Where can i find those new domain? It´s not there in AMP under the Domain.

  • Hi, once I have changed my nameservers from my domain name host to your hosting, then what do I do? How do I find the new name in CPanel?

  • Hi, I need to transfer some domains with you so as to have a multi-domain. The problem is that the domains have extensions .com, .eu, .bike and do not appear in the list of Step 1: Domain Availability for Transfer.

    How can I do ?

    Thank you

    Giorgio

    • Hello Georgio,

Thank you for contacting us. InMotion Hosting can only support .com, .org, .biz, .net,.us or .info domains. If your domain type is not included in this list, you can still host the domain with InMotion Hosting, but you will need to change your nameservers.

      Thank you,
      John-Paul

  • Hey Scott…just got off the phone with LiveSupport and you were spot on…they did the DNS push as you suggested and they are now seeing the servers…thanks man!

  • Ok guys so it’s now been 2 days since I used the ADD-ON Domain feature to put these 3 domains on:
    SELLINGUSEDMOTORHOME.COM
    SELLCLASSAMOTORHOME.COM
    SELL-MOTORHOME.COM

Things looks fine in both ends…InMotion Hosting and over at GoDaddy where I updated the Nameservers a couple days ago.  I do NOT have any sites loaded against those domains…but my question is…should I see any kind of a Coming Soon or anything other than Server Not Found?

You can go do a WHOIS at GoDaddy and you will see I have the nameservers listed correctly so what am I still missing?

    Thanks Dave

    • Hello Dave,

The WHOIS lookup does indeed point to our nameservers for all three domains. However, when doing a dig for the authoritative server, they all come up blank. If you are certain you have added the addons to your cPanel account as per our article, then you simply need to contact our Live Support so they can give the DNS a push from the server side. It is rare, but sometimes this needs to be done.

      Kindest Regards,
      Scott M

  • Hey Arnel…thanks but being new to inmotionhosting and setting stuff up like this in general…I learned that I had not yet done the Add-on Domain with you guys for each of the 3 domains…so the GoDaddy guys asked me about that and suggested I go back and do that and give it a day or two to propagate…so did that on your end and now waiting.  Thanks Dave

  • I have 3 domains at GoDaddy that I changed the NameServers on 3 days ago, but none are propagating…just getting the Server Not Found message.  I used the following posted at the top of this page:

    ns.inmotionhosting.com
    ns2.inmotionhosting.com

What am I missing? I've done this many time before with other hosts, so not sure why it's taking more than 3 days to propagate.

You can check the WHOIS and all 3 show DNS pointing to you.

    SELLINGUSEDMOTORHOME.COM
    SELLCLASSAMOTORHOME.COM
    SELL-MOTORHOME.COM

    Help appreciated
    • Hello Dave,

As per my earlier response, we have no way to correct an assigned name server if the domain was registered through a 3rd party (like GoDaddy). If you’re having problems with propagation of the name server, then you will need to contact the domain registrar where you registered the domain for further assistance.

      Regards,
      Arnel C.

    • Hello Sudhir,

If you are looking to add your domain to your cPanel then you may do so by following this guide on adding addon domains. However if you want a standalone DNS server then you may follow this guide.

      Best Regards,
      TJ Edens

    • Hello Dave,

If the domain name is registered with GoDaddy and you have put in for a name server change, but it’s not happening, then you will need to contact GoDaddy and make sure that the name server change was done correctly. We do not have control of the domain since it is with a 3rd party.

I hope this helps to answer your question, please let us know if you require any further assistance.

      Regards,
      Arnel C.

  • The domain points to NS01.DOMAINCONTROL.COM and NS02.DOMAINCONTROL.COM.I transferred the domain from godaddy to inmotiongosting. All attempts to change the nameservers to  ns.inmotionhosting.com and ns2.inmotionhosting.com has been unsuccessful. the domain is pinforest.com

    • Hello Mat,

Thank you for contacting us. There is currently a known problem in AMP that is causing this problem. Please submit a ticket request to Live Support requesting a Namesrvers update.

They will email you back upon completion of your request.

      Thank you,

  • I recently, Attached name server with <a href=”https://odosta.com”>my site</a>, But it gives an error after sometime and shows godaddy redirect page.

    Should I add two name server like Godaddy, or 3 name server, As I have my own hosting details, Please tell, How to add dns at domain panel, As I add through my own reseller hosting site as;

    • Hello Emily,

I looked at your domain, and it is pointed to:
      Name Server: NNS21.WINSHOSTING.COM
      Name Server: NS22.WINSHOSTING.COM

This means they are currently handling your DNS. I recommend checking your setup with them (such as redirects, .htaccess rules, etc.) to ensure you are pointed correctly.

We use 2 nameservers, but how it should be setup is really up to you, .

      Thank you,
      John-Paul

    • Hello Mat,

We’re sorry that you’re having problems with the name servers, but we need to know where and how you’re updating them. Please provide us a little more information on the issue and we would be happy to help.

If you have any further questions or comments, please let us know.

      Regards,
      Arnel C.

  • I pointed my nameservers to ns.inmotionhosting.com and ns2.inmotionhosting.com after migrating from godaddy but I keep getting the error “There was a problem with processing your request. Ensure that the nameservers you are trying to set have been created. If they have not, you can go here to do so.”

Once I click to proceed it redirect to a page that says “Oops…there was an error with your request”. Please what should I do?

    • Hello Mat,

Please try again as those are indeed the proper names to our name servers. If it still fails, please tell us where you are trying to update the name servers (with us or with someone else)

      Kindest Regards,
      Scott M

  • Where do I find my second InMotion IP address to update my DNS on my old host? I have the primary for the NS1.[domain].com but don’t have a second IP address for the NS2.[domain].com. Thanks in advance…

  • hi there, if I change the nameserver of my domain and point them to Inmotion, will I suffer any loss in emails while its being propogated?

    • Hello Bruce,

As different nameservers will propagate at different times, you will want to check both the old and the new email servers during the 24 hours after making the switch.

      Kindest Regards,
      Scott M

  • Hello, I just followed all the steps to set my custom name servers on my new reseller account, however:

My main domain, the one that I used to create my reseller account, is registered elsewhere, so there’s some challenges with the setup.

My question: does my main domain (the one used to create the account) needs to be created as a add-on domain in my cPanel?

I’m asking this because I don’t see my main domain listed in my WHM.

    Thanks for any clarification.

    Daniel

    • Hello Daniel,

The primary domain name of a cPanel should be visible when you click on “List Accounts”. The domain name itself is not listed in Addons on the cPanel, but can be seen in the left hand side panel.

      Kindest Regards,
      Scott M

    • Hello Jalomo,

Thanks for the question. Your question is very general. Our hosting can use German domain names, but you have to point the name servers (as per the article above) to our hosting servers. There are no special German settings beyond that. If you’re wanting to use the German language settings in the cPanel interface, you can do that within the cPanel. There are no specific language settings for the Account Management Panel (AMP).

      Kindest regards,
      Arnel C.

    • Hello, I have been dealing for the last day with this problem:
I asked you to transfer my web from another hosted, I thought that everything was ok, until I realized that I did not change my dns.
I made that on monday, and after that, I can not see the pictures in the web, the last changed in the dashboard, I do not received the emails from the web. I made a test purchase and I do not even see that in prestashop dashboard.
It is like the web is not conected with my prestashop dashboard.
I need to fix this problem as soon as posible, please.

    • Hello Simon,

I checked your domain and it seems that there may not be any website files within your document root, which is why you are seeing the Index of / when you visit leboncombi.com. However other than that, your website is coming to our servers as it should.

      Best Regards,

Do I use a wrong DNS for the Web Hostig – Power Plan ?

    • Hello Simon,

Thank you for your contacting us about your domain name. I looked and cannot find an account associated with your domain name.

Since this is just the public forum, I cannot provide any account specific information.

Please contact Live Support, so they can locate your account, and check for misspellings, etc.

      Thank you,
      John-Paul

    • Hello Keith,

Thank you for your question. You will use the same nameservers as seen above on your VPS, unless you setup custom Nameservers for your server.

Please see this similar question we answered, as it includes additional information.

      Thank you,
      John-Paul

  • After creating the A record in the cPanel but when I got domainbox.net admin to change the namverservers, I got this message: Failed to Modify Domain Nameservers: Nameserver not found at registry

    • my domain is registered with web.com which you do not list. However, you don’t say where to go next. I have unlocked my domain there and have an authorization code ( a1#ef0377ef).

    • Hello Camille,

This article is only for changing the name servers to which your domain points. It does not involve an authorization code or moving the domain.

However, if you are transferring your domain to us and have already received your Auth code from the other registrar, you can follow our transfer instructions here and you should be all set.

Also, know that if you did not point to our name servers prior to transferring to us, you will still need to do that once the transfer is complete.

      Kindest Regards,
      Scott M

    • Hello jalomo,

Thank you for your question. Yes, we can definitely host .de (german) domains by pointing to our servers.

But, you must register the domain elsewhere, since we only sell .com, .net, .org, .us, .biz, and .info domains.

      Thank you,
      John-Paul

  • Can you help me here? The domain is registered on Godaddy. I wish to use the email service I have there but point to my hosting on InMotion.

  • Hi there,

We originally had our website hosted through a different company, but are now looking to host with inmotion. My domain is a .ca (registered elsewhere) … is it just changing my name servers that needs to be done if I wanted to host my site through inmotion?
Just a little confused on the process of changing our hosting company since you don’t work with .ca

    Thanks,

    Mark

    • Hello Mark,

Thanks for the question. Yes, you will need to change your name servers as they are listed in the article above. Since we do not manage foreign domains, you will need work with your domain registrar to change the name servers. If you need more information on name servers, please see What is a name server? Please be aware that changing a name server does require up to 24 hours of domain propagation.

Changing the name servers to our hosting service will enable you to move your website files to our hosting servers and then let our hosting service host your website. I hope that helps to clarify the issue.

Let us know if you have any further questions.

      Regards,
      Arnel C.

  • Hello everyone!

Excelent tool to check the propagation of a ‘NEW DOMAIN’ -having changed into Inmotion Hosting Inc. DNS!

I think your tool ‘really works‘ because you have created it for a ‘NEW DOMAIN REGISTERED’, but isn’t your responsability -for a while-, what append with possible subdomains  Inmotion Hosting Inc customers create then. Yep?

Then, I’m very glad for your service support and kindness of allways!

  • Hello Jeff! Thanks for answer!

The domain a purchased is conscienciacristica.net, and the addon domain is universidadcorazon.com

    • It appears there was an issue on your account. I have corrected the issue and pushed out the DNS for this domain. The domain should begin resolving within 4-24 hours, usually earlier.

  • Hello there!

I have domain already registered with InMotionHosting and it’s working!  Yesterday, I created an add-on domain, and still after more than 30 hours I cannot see any response. In fact, your visual domain routing tool says it could be an error with the DNS setup or the domain name is not registered.

As long as I understand, if I have my main domain with InMotionHosting I don’t need to configure DNS.

    Could you help me. please?

  • Once Ive changed the nameservers do I need to change the A & CNAME records as well? I fear that my website is now lost in limbo

    • Hello Al,

Thank you for your question. Pointing to our nameservers will allow us to host yor DNS. If you just want to host with us, this should be sufficient.

But, this depends on your specific setup. We are happy to help, but will need some additional information. Are you following a guide? Can you provide a link?

Is your email and website hosted with us?

If you have any further questions, feel free to post them below.

      Thank you,
      John-Paul

    • Hello john,

Thank you for your suggestion. If your domain is registered with us, we have a step-by-step guide on updating your nameservers in amp.

On the bottom of the article we have links to guides for the most common domain registrars. If your registrar is not covered there, let us know, and we can attempt to locate their specific guide.

I’d be happy to include definitions for specific terms. Are there some terms, specifically you want more information on?

      Thank you,
      John-Paul

    • Hello Beth,

The answer to your question is YES! You would need to change name servers for the domain name, then make some DNS changes. Fortunately, we do have a tutorial you can follow: Modify your MX records. There’s also a video in that tutorial that will explain the process.

Please let us know if you require any further assistance.

  • I recently registered a new domain with namecheap and i already have a domain hosted in inmotion hosting.. since i have option for addon domain can i host the other domain here on inmotioon and how is that i redirect the domain from name cheap. please help me through all the steps to successfully host the other site.

    • Hello Sathyanarayana,

Thanks for the question! Yes you can host the other domain here even though you registered the domain with NameCheap. The steps would be:

      1. You need to change the name servers (as per the article above) to point to InMotion
      2. Next, you would add an add-on domain through the cPanel of your account.

Remember that when you change the name servers there may be a short delay known as DNS propagation.

If you require further assistance, please let us know.

      Regards,
      Arnel C.

  • Hello

I have a problem trying to point my existing domain to your hosting.

I have a domain registered in Poland via home.pl. The domain is called kucharzniedzielny.pl

I created an addon domain within my hosting with you (my main domain is sundaycook.net registered with you) but when I try to repoint the nameservers in home.pl it returns an error message saying that the DNS servers are not configured properly –  SOA records are missing.

    Can you help?

    Thanks

    Aleksandra

    • It may take your registrar a bit of time to determine that the configuration is indeed here. I recommend waiting a few hours to ensure that your registrar is pulling the correct records. If you continue to experience issues, I recommend contacting your registrar directly for further information.

  • Hello,

Arn said: ….the cPanel is automatically notifying the server that DNS entries need to be added, and these entries are created automatically. This is only done when the domain is pointing to our name servers

We plan to host our exiting domain with inmotion, so does that mean we have to change the name server settings at our registrar before setting up the inmotion account or does the point in time not matter at all, so we can first order the inmotion account, then set up all content and finally change the name server settings.

I assume while ordering the account we have to select the “I already own this domain or will handle the registration seperately” option and enter our domain name. Are there any other special settings except the name servers to make all work.

  • If I have the power plan I am able to operate up to 6 websites.  If  one of those websites is for someone else, will they be able to access CPanel and only access their website information if I create a login for them?

    • Hello C, and thanks for the question.

With any of our shared hosting accounts, there would only be one central cPanel user that has access to all of the sites.

You could create a separate FTP user that only has access to one of your sites. Then the someone else that you give that FTP information to would be able to upload any website files just for that site, and couldn’t manage any of the other site files on the account.

However if they needed access to other things in cPanel such as creating their own databases, or managing their own email accounts. You would instead need a reseller account which allows for separate cPanel users.

Also a VPS or dedicated server comes with the ability to have separate cPanel accounts.

Please let us know if you have any further questions at all.

      – Jacob
