What are Solid State Drives (SSDs)?

InMotion Hosting servers are now using SSDs. SSDs or Solid State Drives are a type of hard drive that uses no mechanical parts. The memory mechanism is much like RAM with the difference being that data is saved in nonvolatile flash memory. “Nonvolatile” means that the data saved in the memory will not disappear when the device is turned off. Computers of all types normally have two types of memory: volatile and nonvolatile memory. Volatile memory is usually called RAM while the non-volatile memory has traditionally been the hard drive or other media storage types (e.g. USB thumb drives, diskettes, and writeable optical media such as DVDs and CDROMs). Why use SSDs?

The main advantage of using an SSD is its performance. Since there are no moving parts, access and reading times are much faster than you would find in a non-SSD hard drive. Since data can be accessed faster, then websites are faster when using SSDs.

When will SSDs be available?

InMotion Hosting is now using SSD drives in our newest shared and reseller servers. If you’re a new customer, you can sign up for an SSD hosting account now! Within the next few weeks, all of the servers will be migrating to SSD drives over the normal End-of-Life(EOL) cycle for each server. This means that not all of the servers will be immediately replaced with SSD drives. The update process will gradually occur throughout a period of time.

Migrating to a Server using SSD

If you want to migrate to a server using SSD drives, we can accommodate your request depending on the current migration volume and availability of hardware.

If you wish to move your account to a server using an SSD, please send a verified ticket via the Account Management Panel (AMP). The request should be titled “Request for move to an SSD server.”
